Read An Interview
with the Artist
Peggy Harris was born in Washington, D. C., grew up in Kansas City
with
loving parents Neal and LaVerne, has an art degree from the University
of
Kansas, and has been a gifted artist all of her life.
However, her reputation as an internationally acclaimed wildlife
artist,
teacher, and television personality didn't just "happen"
overnight. It
was achieved one painting at a time, one day at a time, over a 20
year
career that had a beginning as innocent as the baby animals she
paints.
Years
ago, friends of Peggy and her husband Bob, opened a home-art-show
business and one evening after dinner the friends were discussing
the
new venture and the wide variety of art they were offering. "What
can'tyou get?", asked Peggy. "Animals," replied the
friends. "Particularly baby animals."
And that was the start of it all. You see, Peggy LOVES baby animals.
So, as Peggy began crafting her signature style of baby animal designs,
today known as "Harris critters," and sales of her paintings
began to
skyrocket, other home-art-show companies from all over the US began
lining up to try to get on her customer list. The demand was far
outrunning the supply.
Obviously, there had to be a better, easier,...and faster way of
painting fur and feathers, so Peggy began to experiment with all
kinds
of different materials and techniques. Thus was born, in time, the
"Harris Method."
Using a limited palette, gel mediums, the "wrong" brushes
the "wrong"way and some everyday items (like Q-tips and
cotton balls), Peggy began
to achieve a wonderfully soft, furry look in a reasonable amount
of time. And,
best of all, the "look" got better and better and faster
and faster.
In those 20 years, Peggy's studio produced, by hand, over 100,000
paintings...and they ALL sold...most before they were even painted.
"Unbelievable!," said the Executive Producer of WDCN,
Nashville's public
TV station. But, when he too, learned everything he'd heard was
true, he asked
Peggy to star in "Peggy Harris' Paintable Kingdom." That's
when
everyone found out what an energetic, talented teacher she is. The
show was a hit nationwide and, to date, 65 shows have been produced.
With the success of television came publishing offers from North
Light
Books, for whom she has authored "Painting Baby Animals with
Peggy
Harris," (oil on canvas),"Painting Baby Animal Treasures"
(oil and
acrylic on surfaces), and "Painting Nature". Peggys acrylic
method books for Plaid Enterprises include,, "Adorable Baby
Animals", "Sing a Happy Song", "Some Bunny's Stuck
on You", "Copy Cats and Cut Ups", "Baskets of
Babies", "Baby Animal Tray Parade" and "Bow Wows and Meows".
Today, Peggy lives with husband Bob Sanders in the wooded hills
outside of
Nashville, TN, enjoys her daughter, Kathy, and son-in-law, Tim,
and plays
raucously with her grandson, Ryan. She also paints (a lot!), has
recently served on the Board of Directors of The Society of Decorative
Painters (SDP) and currently serves on the Board ot Trustees of
the Decorative Arts Collection (DAC).
Peggy travels extensively, nationally and internationally, to conventions,
seminars, and
SDP chapters teaching her unique, workable, fun method to thousands
of
appreciative students who have her books, videos, brushes,... and
love of baby animals.
